What is a Baby Dedication

Children are a precious gift from the Lord and they belong, ultimately and always, to God not their parents. God is responsible for the way in which they were designed and already knows the plan and purpose for their future. There are several examples of baby dedications in the Bible. Hannah dedicated her son, Samuel (the son of which she had prayed), to God (1 Samuel 1:24-28). Joseph and Mary brought the infant child, Jesus, to the temple following His circumcision at eight days to present Him to the Lord (Luke 2:22-24).

We know that salvation can only be obtained through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It cannot be passed on to a child through a baby dedication. A baby dedication is a confirmation of the parents’ love for God. It is a clarification of ownership of the child. It is a commitment from the parents to raise the child God’s way, with the desire that one day the child will receive Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
